Director builds his sustainability team’s visibility to demonstrate the environmental and business impact of their important work

Our director level client knew his team had a visibility issue. They were doing critical work in the sustainable investment space but the broader business had little to no idea about the positive impact of their work for both the environment and their company. He engaged pilotPR to create a team visibility strategy spanning internal and external platforms with the imperatives that the team was aligned on what they needed to do to build their visibility and they were clear on how they were going to support each other to appear ‘greater than the sum of their parts’.

The Challenge

Our client and his team had a visibility problem. They were doing critical work in the sustainable investing space, but the broader business either had no idea about the impact of their important work or didn’t understand why it was relevant to the business.

This perspective existed from board level and the executive team down through all layers of the business. The entire team knew if they could educate internal stakeholders about the impact of their work they’d build supporters and even champions for their initiatives so they could grow their portfolio and make an even greater impact.

The team first needed to be clear on what they wanted their audience to understand about the impact of their work and the results they wanted from their greater visibility. Everyone on the team was already at capacity in their roles, so their work needed to be results-driven from day one, but also be purposeful and easy to integrate with their existing workloads.

The Solution

We delivered two bespoke workshops to give the team a strategy they could follow, but also to ensure individual buy-in across the team to ensure the plan would work.

The first workshop was on the criticality of visibility and how it would enhance the team’s ability to gain funding for their work and to navigate decision-makers as they worked to grow the impact of the team. The second workshop was focussed on giving the team a strategic framework that they could adapt as a group to suit their objectives as well as their own areas of expertise. We also created a clear framework for how they would support each other’s visibility efforts to amplify any activity.

We followed up the workshops with a series of one-on-one sessions for each of the team to keep them accountable and trouble-shoot as they got started. We were also on-tap via phone, email and text if they needed feedback in real time.

The Results

The team launched a multi-layered visibility strategy that spanned influencing the board and executive team, internal communications platforms including email updates and the intranet, special events like Town Halls and inter-department events. Each team member knew what they needed to say and where, so the action they needed to take was clear and easy to fit into their day-to-day.

They were told their visibility had increased significantly across the business, with feedback from the executive team to middle management and entry level employees that they had no idea about the impact of their work until they started implementing their visibility strategy.

The program made each member accountable for their part, sharing the load across everyone and protecting the leader, whose own workload was significant, from being the one to drive the program.

The content the team created also made their visibility on LinkedIn easy, as they were able to adapt their work and post it on social media to share the results of their work with their industry and network.
